The concept of this prototype proposal was inspired by the telescoping house typology native to Buffalo, NY, that was developed by immigrants in the 1920s who started with small starter homes that they extended backwards with smaller or larger additions.

The project is separated into three modules that build off of each others roof lines. The massing increases in size with each module and are connected through asymmetrical roofs. The front two modules act as a complete starter house with a kitchen, dining table, handicap accessible bathroom, and pull out bed that also works as a couch. The third module is left as only a timber frame structure with a foundation for the purpose of being a framework for later use if the occupant finds a need or resources to expand their home.

This proposal of affordable housing in Buffalo is an alternate option of home ownership to the public. Two couples co-housing permits a cheaper initial cost and cost of living by sharing amenities. The house is designed to live up to the reputation of Buffalo as being a “city of good neighbors”. Windows are strategically placed to not look into neighbor’s houses of close proximity by implementation of different peaked roofs, skylights, west/east windows and the overall subtraction of form of the house. This house design can be placed in the bailey green neighborhood smoothly, but zenner st. Also provides an opportunity to implement additional co-houses to further populate the community.

More than one third of the housing structures in Buffalo are Buffalo double, which are two floor/two flat houses. From the outside, these houses look like single family homes and it is not really possible to make any distinction between the 2 apartments. The objective of this project was to propose a new Buffalo double typology that would allow for more personalization and allow both residential units to have their own expression, while remaining an affordable option for families with low incomes.

Affordable housing offers a chance for people who don’t have the financial means to buy a house and become homeowners. The program that is generally offered for these people only includes basic living components and does not offer a way to accommodate to the individuality of the home owner. Because of this, Simple – affordable housing offers a new component to the program, that being the lifestyle space. The lifestyle space is designed to promote activity and hobby to the family to live happier and healthier lives.
